This musical tells the captivating story of the Irish-born, Australian bushranger, Captain Moonlite, also known as Andrew ‘George’ Scott, who led a ragged bunch of young misfits to stage a siege and shoot out near Gundagai, NSW. The musical is set in a death cell of Sydney’s Darlinghurst Gaol on the eve of Captain Moonlite’s execution in 1880. We hear about the events that led up to his execution including the birth of the Captain Moonlite legend. ABOUT THE CHARACTERS GEORGE SCOTT Andrew George Scott, an Irish-born Australian bushranger. Son of an Anglican clergyman, he trained as an engineer in London. He was highly intelligent, well-educated, articulate and from a good family. JAMES NESBITT James grew up in a poor household in Melbourne with an abusive, alcoholic father, he turned to crime at a young age and had been in and out of gaol for petty theft since he was a teenager. CHARLIE Also known as Thomas Williams was a nice looking nineteen-year-old. He was Scott’s assistant/secretary, helping with the lecture tour. An impressionable young man from a respectable family he had been working at a biscuit factory until his left hand was crushed by a roller. WARNECKE AKA Augustus/Gus was born in Fitzroy, Victoria, where he had been living with his brothel- and hotel-owning father. He had been working in a plumber’s shop until he was flogged after losing half a crown of the boss’ money. At fifteen years old he was the youngest member of Captain Moonlite’s gang, and he died in the siege at Wantabadgery. ROGAN Thomas Rogan was a bootmaker who had also served short prison sentences for larceny and horse stealing. Also known as Thomas Brown or Baker. He was twenty-one years old when he joined Captain Moonlite’s Gang. He was executed alongside Andrew George Scott even though he spent most of the siege at Wantabadgery hiding under a bed.
