Broadway’s greatest farce is light, fast-paced, witty, irreverent and one of the funniest musicals ever written. A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum takes comedy back to its roots, combining situations from time-tested, 2000-year-old comedies of Roman playwright, Plautus, with the infectious energy of classic vaudeville.
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is a nonstop laughfest in which Pseudolus, a crafty slave, struggles to win the hand of a beautiful, but slow-witted, courtesan named Philia for his young master, Hero, in exchange for freedom. The plot twists and turns with cases of mistaken identity, slamming doors and a showgirl or two.
This unforgettable, hysterical musical allows a terrific ensemble of comedic actors to shine – “something for everyone, a comedy tonight!”

Auditions will take place on the evening of Monday August 12 & Tuesday August 13 at the Richmond School of Arts, March St, Richmond.
All roles: require an individual singing audition. Either sing the excerpt from “Comedy Tonight” (see below), or 32 bars from a suitable musical theatre song you are familiar with (bring sheet music, no backing tracks). A repetiteur will accompany you.
Leads: during your individual audition, you will also be required to do an acting audition. Sides (audition pieces) will be available on our website. While you don’t have to attend a dance audition unless you’re also auditioning for a Courtesan or Protean, you may choose to attend one.
Courtesans: will be required to also attend one of our dance auditions.
Proteans: during your individual audition, you will be required to do an acting audition. You will also need to attend one of our dance auditions and show if they can do anything acrobatically (if possible).
Auditionees will need to do the following:
- Make sure you have thoroughly read the Information Pack, and that you are available for all key dates during the rehearsal and performance period.

- If auditioning for a Courtesan or Protean, also book in to one of our 15 minute dance auditions.

- Download a Word version of the Audition Form. Complete your Audition Form (either inserting into it or attaching a photo/headshot of yourself), print it out and bring it to your audition.
- If auditioning for a lead role or a Protean, download the Sides (Acting audition, below) for your chosen Character/s and make sure you are familiar with it/them.
CHARACTERS AND AUDITION PIECES
The information below contains age guidelines and not set in stone. All the characters in ‘Forum’ need to have good comedy timing.
SENEX: MALE, AGE: 40 plus, BARITONE (Vocal Range: top G4 – bottom B2) An older man, but one still attracted to wine, women, and song; the perennially henpecked husband; must be able to sing and move, and have great comic timing.
DOMINA: FEMALE (or Male as Woman), AGE: 40 plus, MEZZO-SOPRANO (Vocal Range: top F5 – bottom B3) Strong, overbearing wife to Senex. A fiery broad who was once a beauty, but she does not realize that time has since passed. Must be able to sing and move.
HYSTERIUM: MALE, AGE: 20 – 40 BARITONE, (Vocal Range: top G5 – bottom D4) Slave to Senex and Domina – frantic and frenetic, tightly wound and paranoid. Pseudolus cons him into helping him in his plots, including dressing Hysterium up as the corpse of Philia. Must be able to sing and move.
PSEUDOLUS: MALE, AGE: 30 – 40, BARITONE (Vocal Range: top A4 – bottom A2) Slave to Hero – sly, conniving, and willing to do anything for his freedom. A larger than life guide through this farcical romp. A puppet master and leader of what is posed as a band of merry actors. Must be able to sing and move.
PSEUDOLUS SIDES 1 and PSEUDOLUS SIDES 2
HERO: MALE, AGE: 20 – 25, TENOR (Vocal Range: top G4 – bottom B2) The handsome young Roman son of Senex and Domina, Hero is a lovesick juvenile who schemes with Pseudolus how he can win the hand (and body) of Philia – practical, privileged, romantic; must sing.
LYCUS: MALE, AGE: 40 plus, BARITONE (Vocal Range: top F5 – bottom A3) Lycus is the owner of the brothel – snaky, slimy, lecherous procurer of courtesans; Must be able to move.
PHILIA: FEMALE, AGE: 18-25, SOPRANO (Vocal Range: top G# – bottom middle C) A virginal girl. An archetypal ingénue. She’s beautiful and young, devoted, pretty – but not by any means stupid.
MILES GLORIOSUS: MALE, AGE: 20-30, BASS (Vocal Range: top F5 – bottom B3) A handsome Roman warrior. Manly and Boastful. Vain and proud and pompous. Must be able to sing and move, have great command, strength.
ERRONIUS: MALE, AGE: 50-60 Erronius is the befuddled old father to his long lost children partially blind and always confused.
COURTESANS: FEMALE, AGE: 18-30. Various Vocal Ranges. 6 women to play the sexy and smart Gymnasia Tintinabula, Panacea, Vibrata, The Geminae Twins. Dancing Roles.
